Acupuncture for Joint Pain

Joint pain can arise from a wide range of causes — from overuse injuries and sprains to chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or bursitis. Regardless of the underlying cause, acupuncture offers effective relief by reducing inflammation, improving circulation to the affected area, and releasing tension in the surrounding muscles and connective tissue that often contributes to joint discomfort.

Acupuncture treatment for joint pain is highly individualised. Needles are placed both at local points around the affected joint and at distal points along the relevant meridians to promote healing and restore normal function. For example, specific point combinations exist for shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle pain, each targeting the unique anatomy and energy pathways of that area. This precision allows treatment to be effective across many different joint conditions.

In TCM, joint pain reflects an obstruction in the smooth flow of Qi and Blood through the meridian system. The nature of the obstruction — whether it is characterised by stiffness and cold sensitivity (Cold Bi), heavy aching with swelling (Damp Bi), sharp and fixed pain (Blood Stasis), or heat and redness (Heat Bi) — guides the treatment approach. This diagnostic framework ensures that two patients with knee pain, for instance, may receive quite different treatments based on their individual pattern.

Many patients experience significant pain reduction and improved mobility within a few sessions, though chronic conditions typically require a sustained course of treatment. Josephine may incorporate cupping, moxa, or topical herbal liniments as part of your treatment to enhance results. Gentle movement recommendations and dietary adjustments based on your TCM pattern round out a comprehensive approach to joint health.
